Founded in 1958, Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH), also known as Peking University Third Clinical Medical College, is a hospital directly administered by the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China. It is a comprehensive Grade A tertiary hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, preventive healthcare, rehabilitation and health management.
Outstanding Medical Service Volume and Efficiency
Over the years, PUTH has maintained a leading position in Beijing in terms of medical service volume and efficiency, with more than 2,300 beds currently. In 2024, the hospital provided services to over 5.5 million outpatient and emergency patients and more than 180,000 inpatients, with an average of over 110,000 surgeries performed annually and an average length of stay of 4.3 days, ranking among the top in China. The Department of Ophthalmology ranks among the top tier in China in the fields of ocular trauma, corneal transplantation, cataract and glaucoma. The Department of Gastroenterology is at the forefront of China in the research on the pathogenesis and treatment of peptic ulcers and the diagnosis and treatment of early gastric cancer. The Department of Cardiology has made remarkable achievements in interventional treatment of coronary heart disease, rehabilitation treatment of cardiac patients, and the coordinated development of cardiovascular clinical practice and basic research. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology serves as the National Clinical Research Center for Women's Health and Obstetric and Gynecological Diseases. The Department of Obstetrics and the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine are the national medical quality control centers for obstetrics and rehabilitation medicine respectively. The Department of Reproductive Medicine acts as the leader of the National Expert Group for Quality Management of Assisted Reproductive Technology. The hospital has been included in the list of national pilot units for integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine "flagship" hospitals. The Department of Reproductive Medicine, the Department of Sports Medicine, and the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine have successfully been approved as national-level construction units for integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine "flagship" departments. In 2024, the hospital obtained 4 newly selected major difficult and complicated disease clinical cooperation projects of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine.
Patient-Centered Service Innovation
PUTH always adheres to the "patient-centered" principle, continuously innovates measures to improve patients' medical experience. It strengthens MDT and the whole-process management of rare diseases to enhance the ability of treating difficult and critical illnesses. Minimally invasive surgery, day surgery, weekend clinics, and evening clinics serve more patients. The construction of a pain-free hospital is steadily advancing. The hospital improves the comprehensive outpatient appointment platform, expands and optimizes special medical services and international medical services. The construction of a smart hospital has reached a new level, building a safe, convenient and intelligent digital hospital experience for patients both online and offline. The hospital has passed the Level 7 evaluation of the functional application of the electronic medical record system and the Level 4 evaluation of the smart service grading assessment. The functions of the Internet hospital are continuously improved. By the end of 2024, the number of registered users had exceeded 2.3 million, and the cumulative number of Internet diagnosis and treatment services and consultations had reached nearly 700,000.
Commitment to Medical Education and Teaching Innovation
As a clinical medical college of Peking University, the hospital fulfills the fundamental task of "fostering virtue through education", adheres to the student-oriented education concept, prioritizes moral education, and promotes the all-round development of students. The hospital has established an Education and Teaching Center to continuously deepen the reform of medical education and teaching. PUTH attaches great importance to undergraduate education, and its relevant courses have been selected as high-quality undergraduate courses in Beijing universities. Its teaching achievements have won the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education (Undergraduate) in 2022. The team of the Department of Neurology has won the second prize in the National University Teachers' Teaching Innovation Competition. Each year, the hospital undertakes the teaching and training management of nearly 700 undergraduate students, more than 700 postgraduate students, nearly 600 standardized training residents and specialists, and nearly 2,000 visiting physicians/nurses. PUTH always adheres to scientific and technological innovation guided by "clinical problems". The number of projects approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China has ranked first among local hospitals in Beijing for many years. The team led by Academician Qiao Jie has won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award. In recent years, PUTH has launched a number of major initiatives to stimulate the vitality of medical scientific and technological innovation and promote the transformation of innovative achievements. In 2019, the Institute of Medical Innovation was established, and the hospital took the lead in forming the Beijing Xueyuan Road Clinical Medicine Collaborative Innovation Alliance. In 2024, the Association for Science and Technology of PUTH was established, and the Institute of Industrial Development was officially put into use. PUTH has 3 innovative teams of the Ministry of Education, namely the team of Orthopedics, the team of the Institute of Sports Medicine, and the team of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. It also has 3 national-level scientific research platforms, including the National Key Laboratory for the Promotion of Female Fertility, the National Key Laboratory for Vascular Homeostasis and Remodeling, and the National Clinical Research Center for Obstetric and Gynecological Diseases. There are 4 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research platforms, such as the Key Laboratory of Assisted Reproduction of the Ministry of Education, the Engineering Research Center of Precision Medicine for Bone and Joints of the Ministry of Education, the Engineering Research Center of Sports Trauma Treatment Technology and Equipment of the Ministry of Education, and the Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Molecular Biology and Regulatory Peptides of the National Health Commission. In 2024, the Beijing Key Laboratory for Gastrointestinal Tumor Medicine-Engineering Collaborative Innovation and the Clinical Evaluation of Innovative Drugs and Devices for Cardiorenal Metabolism and Immune Inflammation were approved, bringing the number of Beijing Key Laboratories of the hospital to 10.
Exploring New Paths for the Sinking of High-Quality Medical Resources
PUTH has been exploring new paths for the sinking of high-quality medical resources and has ranked among the top in the comprehensive evaluation of medical consortia in Beijing for many years. Twelve cross-regional specialized medical consortia and the Haidian Central-Eastern Comprehensive Medical Consortium have driven the improvement of regional medical service capabilities. The Second Outpatient Department, the Central Party School Campus, the Airport Campus, the North Campus, and the Haidian North Campus are under vertical management, and the homogeneous management has achieved tangible results. PUTH entrusts the management of two district-owned hospitals in Haidian and Yanqing to help the development of medical and health services in the capital. It also entrusts the management of Yan'an Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital to support the old revolutionary base areas. The hospital has built two national regional medical centers, namely the Chongli Campus of PUTH and the Qinhuangdao Hospital of PUTH, to practice the coordinated development strategy of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
Adhering to the Public Welfare of Public Hospitals
PUTH always adheres to the public welfare nature of public hospitals and protects people's lives and health with the sense of responsibility as a "national team". From the snowy plateau to the African continent, from the earthquake-stricken areas to the front line of the fight against the epidemic, the staff of PUTH have demonstrated the great love of medical workers through practical actions. Since 2020, the staff of PUTH have successively rushed to Wuhan, Changchun, Lhasa and other places to provide medical support. The national medical team for aiding Hubei in the fight against the epidemic, composed of 137 medical staff, has won honorary titles such as "Advanced Collective in the National Fight against the COVID-19 Epidemic" and "Model of the Times". In 2022, the main campus of PUTH dispatched 5 teams with nearly 200 staff to provide medical security for the three competition areas of the Beijing 2022 Winter (Paralympic) Games. PUTH and its Chongli Campus were awarded the title of "Outstanding Contribution Collective to the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics" and commended by the Party Central Committee and the State Council. Yanqing Hospital of PUTH was awarded the title of "Advanced Collective of Beijing for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics".
The hospital continues to carry out medical assistance to Tibet and Xinjiang, itinerant medical services, and medical assistance programs. Over the past ten years, 10 batches of 61 medical personnel have participated in the "group-style" medical talent assistance to Tibet, relaying to help the development of local medical and health services on the snowy plateau. Nine batches of 17 cadres have been sent to Xinjiang one after another to steadily promote the work of aiding Xinjiang. The 73 experts of the National Itinerant Medical Team of PUTH have visited 26 hospitals in the Tibet Autonomous Region, Shanxi Province and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In the past five years, the hospital has dispatched a total of more than 200 personnel to support medical institutions such as Daning County Hospital in Shanxi Province, promoting the sinking of high-quality medical resources.

The hospital has won many honors for consecutive years. It has successively been awarded the titles of National Civilized Unit, May 1st Labor Certificate, National March 8th Red Banner Collective, Advanced Collective of the National Health System, Benchmark Unit for Ideological and Political Work in the National Health System, Advanced Collective of the National Medical and Health System, National Model Unit for Traditional Chinese Medicine Work in General Hospitals, National Innovative Hospital for Improving Medical Services, Core Unit for Scientific and Technological Research and Management of Ten Major Diseases in the Capital, and Model Civilized Unit of the Capital. Departments such as the Department of Neurology, Department of Cardiology, Department of Ophthalmology, Institute of Sports Medicine, and Pharmacy Department have won the honorary title of "National Youth Civilization Post". The hospital has been awarded the title of "Model Staff Home" by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.
