Founded in 1886, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University is a large Grade A tertiary general hospital with ophthalmology and otolaryngology as national key disciplines. It has two campuses, namely Chongwenmen Campus and Yizhuang Campus, with a staff of over 3,900.
A Hospital with Three Institutes: Integrated Development of Medical Care, Teaching, Research, Prevention and International Exchange
Centered on comprehensive medical services, the hospital has three affiliated research institutions, namely the Beijing Institute of Ophthalmology, the Beijing Institute of Otolaryngology and the Beijing Institute of Diabetes, forming a development pattern of "one hospital with three institutes". It has evolved into a medical and research consortium integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, disease prevention and international exchange. Ophthalmology and otolaryngology are national key clinical disciplines, allergy (nasal allergy) is a national key clinical specialty, and traditional Chinese medicine ophthalmology is a national key discipline of traditional Chinese medicine.
Strong Scientific Research Strength and Abundant Achievements
The hospital boasts 2 national-level scientific research platforms, including 1 National Engineering Technology Research Center (affiliated to the Ministry of Science and Technology) and 1 National Engineering Research Center (affiliated to the National Development and Reform Commission). It also has 16 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research platforms, such as 2 Engineering Research Centers of the Ministry of Education, 1 Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 1 Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, 1 Beijing Laboratory, 5 Beijing Key Laboratories, 3 Engineering Research Centers of the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and 3 Beijing International Science and Technology Cooperation Bases. In addition, the hospital is a model research ward in Beijing, a registered institution for clinical research on stem cells, and a construction unit of the Beijing Clinical Research Quality Promotion Center. It has received funding from the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission for its scientific and technological achievement transformation platform. Since 2012, the hospital has obtained 326 national-level projects (research topics) and won 49 awards at or above the provincial and ministerial levels (including awards from non-governmental organizations), among which 4 are national awards.
A Key Base for Medical Education and Training
As the Fourth Clinical Medical College of Capital Medical University, one of the first national standardized residency training bases, and one of the first model standardized residency training bases in Beijing, the hospital takes the lead in the Capital Medical University School of Ophthalmology and the Capital Medical University School of Otolaryngology. It also serves as the chair unit for standardized residency training in ophthalmology and otolaryngology in Beijing, shouldering significant teaching and training responsibilities. The hospital has 17 doctoral programs and 28 master's programs, with 86 doctoral supervisors, 216 master's supervisors, and 17 professional training bases in Beijing (including 15 national-level professional bases). Currently, there are over 1,000 trainees of various types in the hospital.

A Leader in Blindness and Deafness Prevention and Treatment
The hospital acts as the chair unit of the National Technical Steering Group for Blindness Prevention and the National Technical Steering Group for Deafness Prevention and Treatment. It houses the WHO Collaborating Centre for the Prevention of Blindness and the WHO Collaborating Centre for the Prevention of Deafness. As a member of the International Eye Bank Association, it has established the Beijing Tongren Eye Bank.
