As a comprehensive teaching hospital, Ruijin Hospital has actively explored the path of high-quality development for public hospitals in recent years. It is among the first batch of pilot hospitals for the high-quality development of national public hospitals, pilot hospitals for the modern hospital management system, and a national emergency medical rescue base. It has been selected into the first batch of projects (guidance category) for the National Medical Center (comprehensive category), and Ruijin Hospital Hainan has become a national regional medical center. It has also been included in the pilot construction project of the national flagship hospital for the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine. The hospital has been awarded the A++ grade in the national public hospital performance assessment for six consecutive years and has been rated as a "National Civilized Unit" for seven consecutive terms.
Disciplinary Layout and Research Platforms
The hospital currently has more than 50 clinical departments and clinical centers, 4 national key disciplines, 27 national key clinical specialties, and 2 national clinical professional quality control centers. It houses the National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure for Translational Medicine (Shanghai), the State Key Laboratory of Omics and Diseases, the National Clinical Research Center for Metabolic Diseases, 10 provincial and ministerial-level key laboratories, and 35 national drug clinical trial specialties. In addition, it has established research institutions such as the Innovation Center, the Whole-Life Cycle Health Management Center, the Brain Disease Center, the Institute of Advanced Medical Imaging Technology, the Institute of Medical Chips, the Clinical Research Center, and the Institute of Medical Robotics.
Distinguished Talent Team
The hospital boasts a large number of renowned medical experts at home and abroad, including Chen Zhu and Chen Guoqiang, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Wang Zhenyi, Chen Saijuan, and Ning Guang, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; and Eric GILSON, foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Among them, Academician Wang Zhenyi was awarded the Medal of the Republic, the highest national honor, and the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award.
Landmark Clinical Achievements
Taking safeguarding people's life and health as its mission, the hospital constantly challenges technical boundaries and overcomes difficult and critical diseases. In the 1950s, it successfully treated Qiu Caikang, an iron and steel worker with 89.3% severe burns, breaking the international conclusion at that time that "total burn area exceeding 80% is incurable" and winning international fame. In 1957, it diagnosed the first domestic case of primary aldosteronism, laying the foundation for endocrinology and metabolic diseases in China. In the 1970s, it performed the first domestic allogeneic heart transplantation and the first domestic allogeneic liver transplantation. In the 1990s, significant progress was made in the molecular biological research and clinical treatment of leukemia, and the "Shanghai Protocol" for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia has become an internationally recognized standard treatment method. Entering the new era, in response to the new demands for people's life and health and focusing on the forefront of medicine, after years of efforts, the first domestically produced proton therapy system has been officially approved for market launch.
Digital Medical Services and Advanced Equipment
Based on an information platform, the hospital continuously improves the medical service experience. It has set up the Shanghai Digital Medical Innovation Center and taken the lead in launching a series of application scenarios for convenient medical services. It has also been approved for the Shanghai "Future Hospital" project. Meanwhile, the hospital was among the first in China to be equipped with cutting-edge equipment such as PET-MR, the 6th-generation Gamma Knife for the head, the 4th-generation Da Vinci Surgical Robot System, the intraoperative radiotherapy system, and small animal PET-CT. It also has a large number of high-precision instruments including PET-CT, Tomotherapy System (TOMO), proton radiotherapy system, and 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with medical equipment reaching the international advanced level.
Medical Education System and Teaching Achievements
With the construction of a comprehensive education system as the core, the hospital has made every effort to promote the connection and integration of university education, post-graduation standardized residency training, and specialized training. It continuously strengthens the two major brands of medical French teaching and medical simulation teaching to jointly improve the quality of medical talent training. The hospital is among the first batch of "National Demonstration Centers for Clinical Teaching and Training". Its innovative clinical practice teaching model of "Progressive-Integrated-Immersive Ruijin Clinical Practice" has won the first prize of Shanghai Teaching Achievements.
