Founded in 1937 and named in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the forerunner of China's democratic revolution, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University (hereinafter referred to as "Zhongshan Hospital") is among the earliest large-scale comprehensive hospitals established and managed by the Chinese people themselves. It is a budget-managed unit of the National Health Commission (NHC), a designated institution for the National Medical Center construction project approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, and a pilot hospital for the high-quality development of public hospitals under the NHC. As a comprehensive teaching hospital affiliated to Fudan University, it is co-constructed and administered by the Ministry of Education, the NHC and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, and also ranks among the first batch of Grade A tertiary hospitals in Shanghai. The hospital has consistently been ranked among the top in the performance evaluation of national tertiary public hospitals, winning the highest rating of A++ for consecutive years. It has also secured the first place among comprehensive municipal hospitals in Shanghai for successive years in the performance evaluation of presidents of municipal hospitals conducted by the Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center.

The hospital boasts outstanding comprehensive disciplinary strength. Its clinical capabilities in the fields of cardiology, hepatology, nephrology, pulmonology, gastroenterology and pan-vascular diseases are at the domestic top level and international advanced level. Leveraging its advantageous disciplines to drive the coordinated development of multiple high-quality characteristic discipline clusters, the hospital is equipped with a number of high-level scientific innovation and clinical diagnosis platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Cardiology, the National Clinical Research Center for Radiation and Therapy (Interventional Therapy), 2 Basic Science Centers of the National Natural Science Foundation of China focusing on pan-vascular interventional complex systems and tumor immune ecology, the National Project for Improving the Diagnosis and Treatment Capability of Difficult and Severe Diseases for cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, and the National Engineering Research Center for Immunotherapy (under preparation). In addition, it hosts nearly 50 other provincial and ministerial-level research platforms. Promoting the construction of the National Medical Center, the comprehensive National Medical Center construction project of Zhongshan Hospital officially broke ground on December 18, 2023. The hospital will construct the Shanghai International Medical Science and Innovation Center project and the Phase I project of Qingpu New City Campus. Focusing on addressing the "bottleneck" and "last-mile" issues in the field of biomedicine, it is committed to building a "national treasure" in the field of health and healthcare.

The hospital provides high-quality and efficient medical services. Its main campus covers an area of 108,900 square meters, with 2,005 authorized inpatient beds. It has over 70 operational departments, more than 180 medical and nursing subspecialties, and offers 8 categories of outpatient services. Over 90 MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) groups have been set up to fully meet the multi-level and diversified diagnosis and treatment needs of patients. Keeping pace with the cutting-edge medical technology, the hospital has successfully carried out pioneering medical procedures such as Asia's first robot-assisted living donor liver transplantation and the world's first transcatheter aortic valve replacement using polymer valves.

High-Caliber Talent Team Construction
The hospital is dedicated to building a high-caliber talent team. Since its establishment, it has nurtured 4 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Currently, over 400 person-times have been included in provincial and ministerial-level or above talent programs, and nearly 400 person-times serve as doctoral and master's supervisors. The hospital has a staff of more than 6,200 on its official payroll, among whom over 830 hold senior professional titles.

It has yielded fruitful achievements in scientific research and innovation. Over the past decade, the hospital has undertaken more than 1,000 national-level projects, including National Science and Technology Major Projects, National Key R&D Programs and projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It has published more than 9,000 SCI-indexed papers, with a number of high-quality research findings featured in top international journals such as Cell, Nature, Science and JAMA. Since 2022, the hospital has filed approximately 2,670 patent applications, among which over 1,470 have been authorized and more than 330 have been successfully transferred. Clinical Cancer Bulletin, an English-language academic journal sponsored by the hospital, has been selected into the High-Standard New Journals Program of the China Sci-tech Journal Excellence Initiative.

The hospital boasts strong strength in medical education and teaching. It has constructed an excellent physician training system, with 45 doctoral and master's degree programs and 1 postdoctoral research station in clinical medicine affiliated to Fudan University. It houses 52 standardized residency training bases and standardized specialist training bases. It is fully committed to creating a "5G + Digital Twin Smart Medical Ecosphere", promoting the development of data assets and the innovation of artificial intelligence applications, and continuously upgrading the independently developed integrated smart medical core business system. The hospital won the first prize of the 2022 Smart Social Governance Experiment Project organized by the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission, ranked first among the demonstration units of "digital transformation for convenient medical services" in Shanghai, and was approved as a 5G + Health Management Demonstration Project by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the NHC. In response to the assignments from the NHC and other superior authorities, it has dispatched medical teams to participate in medical assistance missions in Morocco, Tibet, Xinjiang and Yunnan. Since 2011, it has organized national medical teams every year to carry out mobile medical services in old, revolutionary, border and remote areas. It has also provided counterpart support to medical institutions in Tibet, Xinjiang, Yunnan, Guizhou and other regions, achieving remarkable results in the assistance work.
