Founded in 1907, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, formerly known as the General Hospital and Medical School of the Red Cross Society of China established by the Chinese people themselves, is the first hospital run independently by the Chinese in Shanghai. It has nurtured the earliest group of modern medical talents for China. In 1992, the hospital became one of the first to pass the evaluation for Grade A tertiary hospitals in China. It is a hospital directly affiliated to the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China, an affiliated hospital of Fudan University, and a hospital named after the Red Cross Society of China. It is also among the most renowned and internationalized medical, teaching and research centers in China. At present, it has 3,142 authorized inpatient beds, 450 research-oriented beds, 44 clinical and medical technology departments, as well as multiple campuses including the Main Campus, Pudong Campus, Hongqiao Campus and Baoshan Campus.

The hospital houses the National Medical Center for Neurological Diseases, the National Medical Center for Infectious Diseases and the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases. It is also the candidate institution for the National Quality Control Center for Dermatology and Sexually Transmitted Diseases. It has 20 national key clinical specialties designated by the National Health Commission, including Orthopedics, Nursing, Clinical Laboratory, Endocrinology, Neurosurgery, Hand Surgery, Neurology, Traditional Chinese Medicine (Pulmonology), Dermatology, Urology, Nephrology, General Surgery, Gastroenterology, Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Rehabilitation Medicine, Sports Medicine, Medical Imaging, Key Laboratory (Hand Surgery) and Key Laboratory (Antibiotics). The hospital also boasts 10 national key disciplines designated by the Ministry of Education, 2 national key laboratories, 3 Shanghai municipal key laboratories, 2 municipal clinical research centers, 6 municipal engineering technology centers, 4 municipal "Top Priority" clinical medicine centers and 1 municipal "Top Priority" key clinical discipline.
In recent years, the hospital has recorded an annual average of over 6 million outpatient and emergency visits, nearly 200,000 discharged patients, and more than 100,000 surgical operations. As the first medical institution in Shanghai to provide foreign-related medical services, it is designated as a medical service provider by the consulates of 10 countries, having served over 600,000 foreign patients from more than 100 countries and regions worldwide. It has undertaken medical support tasks for major foreign affairs events and international competitions such as the China International Import Expo, World Expo, Olympic Games, APEC Meeting, CICA Summit, SCO Summit and visits to China by foreign dignitaries, earning high recognition and praise.
Huashan Hospital Fujian, co-constructed by Huashan Hospital (as the leading operator) and the Fujian Provincial Government, is among the first batch of national regional medical centers. Building on the long-standing cooperation between our hospital and the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University, the project started operation in May 2021.

Endowed with strong technical strength, the hospital is home to a galaxy of renowned medical experts. It has a staff of over 6,000, among whom more than 80% are medical professionals and over 800 hold senior professional titles. Since its establishment, the hospital has nurtured 4 academicians, 35 person-times selected into national-level high-caliber talent programs, 17 person-times into national-level young talent programs, and 23 lifelong professors. Nearly 40 experts serve as chairpersons or vice-chairpersons of national-level professional academic committees, and over 60 experts hold the same positions in Shanghai municipal-level professional academic committees. The hospital has been rated A++ in the national tertiary public hospital performance assessment, ranking among the top tier nationwide.
While fulfilling a large number of medical tasks, the hospital has achieved remarkable results in scientific research and witnessed the prosperous development of disciplines. In recent years, it has won the Second-Class National Science and Technology Progress Award three times, secured more than 420 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, published over 4,200 academic papers, among which more than 2,900 are included in the SCI database. Notably, the Hand Surgery team pioneered the "contralateral cervical nerve transfer for upper limb hemiplegia after central nervous system injury", and the relevant research paper was published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) with an impact factor of 72.406, being named the most notable article in 2018. The team also won the Special-Class Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award in 2020 and the First-Class National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2024.
As a teaching hospital, Huashan Clinical Medical College of Fudan University currently focuses on cultivating high-quality medical talents for the "Double First-Class" initiative, undertaking the teaching of more than 2,000 students and trainees every year. The hospital has 21 doctoral programs and postdoctoral research stations, with full coverage of master's programs. It is equipped with 20 national standardized residency training bases and 27 standardized specialist training bases. In the past five years, the hospital has developed 1 national-level excellent course, 16 municipal and university-level excellent courses, and 2 key undergraduate courses recognized by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. It has also produced 8 Shanghai Excellent Doctoral Dissertations, 2 Shanghai Excellent Master's Dissertations and 3 Fudan University Excellent Doctoral Dissertations. It hosts a series of international academic conferences, and has successively sent medical, teaching, research and management teams and individuals to over 40 countries and regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia and Japan for academic visits, studies, conferences and exchanges. The hospital has also established friendly cooperative relations with well-known European and American institutions such as Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States, and Rechts der Isar Hospital of Technical University of Munich in Germany, aiming to become one of China's preeminent centers for clinical medicine and medical education and training.
Guided by Original Aspiration, Prioritizing Public Welfare
Since its founding in 1907, Huashan Hospital has always adhered to the Red Cross spirit of "humanity, fraternity and dedication", providing medical assistance and emergency rescue services to all sectors of society. The hospital has carried out humanitarian rescue work during major domestic and international disasters, including the Wenchuan Earthquake Relief (awarded the title of National Heroic Collective in Earthquake Relief by the CPC Central Committee, the State Council and the Central Military Commission), post-typhoon relief in the Philippines, earthquake relief in Nepal, and the treatment of Ebola virus in Africa. Since 1965, more than 40 medical staff of the hospital have been sent to countries such as Somalia, Algeria, Togo, Morocco and Laos to carry out medical assistance under harsh conditions, winning the respect of the people in the recipient countries. In 2017, responding actively to the call of the Party and the country, the hospital dispatched a medical team to Gwadar Port in Pakistan, stepping into the frontline to meet the needs of the Belt and Road Initiative and demonstrating the Red Cross spirit. The hospital has actively aligned with national strategies, carried out targeted health poverty alleviation work and won the title of National Advanced Collective in Poverty Alleviation. In accordance with the arrangements of superior authorities, it has carried out medical assistance programs in Tibet, Yunnan, Xinjiang, Morocco and mobile medical services. Huashan Hospital has been awarded the title of Shanghai Civilized Unit 18 times and National Civilized Unit three times.
