Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) is a modern comprehensive Grade A tertiary hospital integrating medical treatment, education, and scientific research. It serves as the national guidance center for the diagnosis and treatment of difficult and severe diseases designated by the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China. It is also among the earliest hospitals to undertake medical services for foreign guests, a national demonstration base for higher medical education and standardized residency training, as well as a national core base for clinical medical research and technological innovation. Historical Evolution and Cultural Heritage
Founded in 1921 by the Rockefeller Foundation, PUMCH was committed to "becoming the best medical center in Asia" from the very beginning. Over the past century, it has forged the PUMCH Spirit of "Preciseness, Perfection, Diligence and Dedication" and the PUMCH Ethos of "Establishing the Hospital for the Nation, Practicing Medicine for the People, and Pursuing Academics for Truth". It pioneered the modern medical education philosophy of "three fundamentals" and "three strictures", and formed the renowned "Three Treasures of PUMCH"—Professors, Medical Records, and the Library. The hospital has nurtured a generation of medical masters such as Zhang Xiaoqian and Lin Qiaozhi, as well as numerous leaders in modern Chinese medicine, and has helped establish more than 10 well-known large-scale general and specialized hospitals in China today. At present, the hospital covers a total construction area of over 620,000 square meters. It has a staff of more than 4,300 on the official payroll, including 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. There are 64 clinical, medical technology and platform departments, 29 national key clinical specialties, and 6 national-level scientific research platforms such as the National Key Laboratory for difficult, severe and rare diseases, the National Science and Technology Infrastructure for Translational Medicine, the National Clinical Research Center for Obstetric and Gynecologic Diseases, and the National Clinical Research Center for Skin and Immune Diseases. It also boasts 5 national "Double First-Class" construction disciplines, 12 national key disciplines, 9 doctoral degree authorization points for first-level disciplines, 6 national continuing medical education bases, 22 national standardized residency training bases, and 8 national pilot bases for standardized specialist training. The hospital has over 2,000 inpatient beds. In 2024, it performed more than 70,000 surgical operations and treated over 120,000 discharged patients. PUMCH has successively won titles such as "National Civilized Unit", "Advanced Collective of the National Health System", "Advanced Grassroots Party Organization of the Country" and "Advanced Collective in the National Fight against COVID-19". Meanwhile, the hospital also undertakes the important tasks of supporting underdeveloped areas, providing medical support for major national events, and serving as the main medical team for emergencies.
