Human Albumin Is a Clinical Prescription Drug, Not a Daily Health Supplement

The National Health Commission (NHC) reminded the public on the 13th that human albumin is currently mistakenly regarded by many as a "miracle nutritional drug" for nourishing the body or a panacea for boosting immunity. Some people even believe that a shot of human albumin is needed for conditions such as physical weakness, intensive preparation for exams, post-operative recovery, and anti-aging beauty treatments. This perception is clearly misguided.

"Human albumin is a clinical prescription drug, not a nutritional supplement for daily health maintenance," Hu Qiangqiang, spokesperson for the NHC, warned at a press conference held on the same day. Its core clinical use is to correct hypoalbuminemia, and treat specific diseases including pleural and ascitic effusions caused by liver cirrhosis or cancer, kidney diseases, and severe burns. Its primary function is to maintain plasma colloid osmotic pressure.

Hu Qiangqiang stated that human albumin does not have the direct function of enhancing immunity, and blind infusion cannot achieve the effect of "boosting resistance". The human immune system functions mainly through the interplay of innate and adaptive immune systems.

The NHC specifically cautioned that infusion of human albumin is not without risks. All drugs may carry potential risks such as allergies. Infusion must be prescribed by physicians after evaluating the specific patient condition. The public is advised to use the drug in a standardized manner in strict accordance with doctors' advice, and must not purchase or use it blindly following trends.
